Open Space Technology -- The Method
Books About Open Space

Open Space Technology: A User's Guide is a hands-on, detailed description of facilitating Open Space Technology (OST). Written by the originator of the method -- Harrison Owen -- this book documents the rationale, procedures and requirements of OST.

Owen begins by outlining all the practical considerations necessary to create Open Space. He starts with the most important question -- should you do Open Space at all -- and examines what types of situations are appropriate for Open Space Technology and what types are not. He goes on to look at issues such as supplies, logistics, who should come and how you should go about getting them there.

Harrison Owen is President of H. H. Owen and Company. He has worked with a variety of organizations including small West African villages, urban (American and African) community organizations, the Peace Corps, regional medical programs, the National Institutes of Health and the Veterans Administration.

This book can be ordered through your local bookseller or any on-line bookseller such as Amazon.com. You can also order it and Harrison's other books (see below) through the Open Space Institute of the United States for a small discount off the regular retail price -- and in doing so you will help the OSI(US)

  • help people around the world without financial means to access learning and information regarding Open Space
  • support the global Open Space learning community and
  • help to gather and report Open Space stories and supporting research.

The Spirit of Leadership

All about leadership in Open Space, a very different thing than the traditional command and control. Liberating the human Spirit to achieve its potential is the name of the game, and that is precisely the Open Space experience. It could become the everyday experience.

The Power of Spirit: How Organizations Transform

This book is about Spirit and the ways in which Spirit forms and transforms in organizations. In the face of organizational dysfunction and a massive outbreak of Soul Pollution (stress and burnout), the message of this book is clear. Things do not have to be this bad. Profits may be soaring, and so should the human Spirit, and it can - provided we learn to appreciate and care for Spirit's new manifestation in a transforming world. The Open Space experience becomes the experimental laboratory for our learning and a launch pad for a new way of being in organization.
