Requirements for the Selection of Trainers

  • Previous experience in topic area
  • Comfort and experience speaking to diverse groups (age, ethnicity, socioeconomic level, professional background)
  • Aptitude towards and flexibility in using non-lecture approach
  • Interest in evaluating own work and in having others evaluate her / his work
  • Willingness to surrender / give up control or power to the group so that participants are collaborators in their own learning process (respecting that expertise exists within the group and creating a safe environment for learning, sharing and teaching each other)
  • Understanding of what are learning goals, objectives and outcome objectives
  • Sense of humor
  • Advance preparation: Understanding the importance of turning in information in advance and to rehearse a module, willingness to work with deadlines and within a timeframe (including design and preparation time in advance)
  • Keen ability to keep section and activities on time
  • Flexibility to make a quick adjustment when time, activity or participant response has changed
  • Knowing when one is not / is no longer the appropriate trainer for a given topic or group
  • Experience facilitating as well as teaching
  • Creativity
  • Ability to handle conflict resolution, group dynamics, and unexpected situations; ability to switch modes entirely if necessary; ability to model functional and professional communication
  • Ability to design and adjust the dynamics of a module to minimize lecture and elicit participation: understanding collaborative learning, including changing group dynamics, participant input, reflection and response
  • Willingness to work closely with event organizers in needs assessment and presentation design before, during and after presentation
  • Demonstrated support for the success of the participants, the process, other trainers and the event or program

Possibly: Some experience in designing interactive activities or modules

Ideally: Full understanding of / experience in experiential learning / interactive training philosophy and methodology
