Skills Building Workshops

To host this workshop for your organization, community or conference, contact Lisa Heft at lisaheft@openingspace.net

Session / Workshop Description

Using interactive learning methods and a variety of processes from demonstrations to role playing to small group activities, Lisa Heft can teach members of your conference or organization in several basic skills topics.

Duration

Different workshops range from 3 or 4 hours to one day in length

Target Audience

Staff and volunteers of organizations, agencies and collaborative programs; conference participants, educators and presenters

Learning Objectives

After completion of these workshops, participants will have take-home skills directly applicable to their own work. Workshops can also be designed so participants bring drafts and samples of their own presentations, lesson plans and posters for a clinic situation where the group offers feedback on each other's work. For this objective successive sessions may be required.

Content Outline and Description

Below is a sampling of skills building workshops Ms. Heft offers:

  • Interactive learning methods for educators
  • How to navigate a conference and bring what you've learned and seen back home to your organization or community
  • Public speaking and presenter skills (for conference presenters and speakers bureau members)
  • How to design a poster presentation for a conference
  • Introduction to the immune system and introduction to HIV/AIDS

Methodology and Process

These workshops are totally participatory. This type of facilitation is based on adult learning theory, creative drama as developed by Bryan Way, Peter Slade and Viola Spolin, Paolo Friere's and Agosto Boal's work, human behavior change theory, risk reduction theory and community education approaches. Participants will learn via role-plays, group exercises and activities and by sharing their ideas with each other.
